Root Canal Therapy

|| Dental treatments in Centurion, Gauteng ||

A root canal, also known as endodontic therapy, is a procedure to remove any dead or decaying materials and infections from your teeth before irreversible damage occurs. It is not just a procedure to treat the root of the tooth; it’s a treatment for the pulp chamber and the associated canals. The pulp chamber is the hollow part in the tooth’s centre, which houses the pulp, and the canals extend from the pulp chamber down to the end of the roots.

These infections on your teeth are caused when the nerve-filled pulp is exposed to bacteria. This happens when dental trauma severely damages or decays your teeth. If left untreated, this infection can cause you to lose your teeth.

Signs You May Need a Root Canal

  • Severe toothache, especially when chewing or applying pressure.
  • Prolonged sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures, even after removing the stimulus.
  • Darkening or discolouration of the tooth.
  • Swelling and tenderness in nearby gums.
  • A recurring or persistent pimple on the gums.

What happens during the root canal procedure?

  • Diagnosis: We will take X-rays to see the shape of the root canals and determine the extent of the infection.
  • Anaesthesia: Local anaesthesia is administered to numb the tooth and surrounding area. Patients with more anxiety and stress can have it done under conscious sedation.
  • Tooth Isolation: A rubber dam is placed around the tooth to keep it dry and free from saliva.
  • Pulpectomy: An opening is made, and the diseased tooth pulp is removed.
  • Cleaning and Shaping: The inside of the tooth is cleaned, enlarged, and shaped.
  • Filling: After the space is cleaned and shaped, it’s filled with a biocompatible material.
  • Restoration: Finally, the opening on the tooth is sealed with a temporary or permanent filling or crown.

You will receive a permanent crown with your follow-up appointment to ensure your tooth isn’t re-infected or damaged. We may refer you to an endodontist to complete the root canal treatment in complex cases. An endodontist is a specialist in root canal treatments.

What are the benefits of root canal therapy?

  • Tooth Preservation: A root canal allows you to keep your natural tooth rather than having it extracted.
  • Efficient Chewing: It restores normal biting force and sensation.
  • Protection: It protects other teeth from excessive strain.
  • Natural Appearance: The treated tooth retains its natural look with a crown.

Post-Treatment Care

  • You may experience some sensitivity or discomfort post-procedure, which is normal and can be alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications.
  • Maintain proper oral hygiene with regular brushing, flossing, and routine dental check-ups.

Myths and Facts

    • Myth: Root canal therapy is painful.

With modern techniques and anaesthetics, most people report that they’re comfortable during the procedure.
      • Myth: It’s better just to extract the tooth.
