Crowns & Bridges

A dental crown or bridge can restore damaged teeth to protect its structure. A dental crown replaces a single, damaged, stained or cosmetically flawed tooth, while a dental bridge replaces a missing tooth.

Dental Crowns: These are tooth-shaped caps placed over damaged teeth. Apart from protection, crowns offer cosmetic improvements and can be made from various materials, such as ceramic, porcelain fused to metal, or gold. The choice of material often depends on the location of the tooth, patient preference, and budget.

Dental Bridges: A bridge, as the name suggests, bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. It comprises two or more crowns for the teeth on either side of the gap and a false tooth or teeth in between.

What happens during the dental crown procedure?

The dental crown procedure is minimally invasive and usually takes only two appointments.

  • The dentist will numb the area, but other sedation methods can be administered to keep you comfortable and avoid anxiety.
  • The dentist will then remove any damaged enamel from your tooth to create a healthy and stable surface for your dental crown.
  • Impressions, 3D scans and images are taken of your mouth and sent to our on-site dental laboratory. This is where we 3D print your models and mill the crown or bridge with a dental milling machine to ensure a custom, comfortable and perfect fit.
  • A temporary crown or bridge will be placed while the final prosthesis is manufactured to prevent discomfort or self-consciousness.

It’s important to take proper care of your dental crowns and bridges to ensure that no infection or gum disease occurs. Brushing twice daily, flossing once daily, and routine checkups with your dentist and oral hygienist will help prevent infection and tooth decay.

With dental bridges, it’s important to floss between the gums and the base of the bridge using a soft back-and-forth motion. This prevents plaque buildup under your false tooth (pontic).

What are the benefits of dental crowns and bridges?

  • Functionality: They restore the function of the teeth, allowing you to chew, bite, and speak normally.
  • Aesthetics: They improve the appearance of discoloured or misshapen teeth.
  • Protection: Crowns protect vulnerable teeth from further damage.
  • Dental Structure: Bridges prevent other teeth from shifting out of position due to a gap.

Potential Side Effects and Considerations

  • Sensitivity: After receiving a dental crown, you might experience sensitivity to hold and cold. This typically dissipates after a few days.
  • Discomfort: Some people may feel slight discomfort or bite issues, which should be addressed in a follow-up visit.
  • Maintenance: While crowns and bridges are durable, they aren’t as strong as natural teeth. Avoid chewing hard items to prevent damage.

What is the lifespan of dental crowns and bridges?

Dental crowns can last between 5 to 15 years with proper care, and bridges can serve you well for 7 to 15 years, sometimes even longer. Their longevity largely depends on dental hygiene practices and personal habits.

Restorative dental treatments like crowns and bridges not only help enhance your smile but also play a crucial role in maintaining oral health.
